WATERTOWN, Wis. - Needing four points in the last week of the season to secure a first round home game in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament, the Edgewood College women's soccer team left no doubt by sweeping Dominican University on Monday and then Maranatha Baptist on the road tonight. The Eagles beat the Crusaders 2-1, to lift themselves into fourth place.
The Eagles (12-5-1, 8-2-1 NAC) tallied the first goal of the game as freshman Abby Moder took a pass from the Emily Daniels and buried it in the back of the net in the eighth minute. For Moder, a freshman from Menasha, it was her 18th goal in 18 games, which is second in the conference.
Nineteen minutes into the second half, the Eagles struck again. This time, Daniels recorded a goal of her own, scoring her first goal of the season, off a pass from Tammi Hagensick. For Daniels, a junior from Slinger, it was the third goal of her career.
Maranatha Baptist (5-11, 3-8 NAC) began to press forward and it soon paid off. Edgewood College was whistled for a foul inside the penalty area in the 73rd minute. The Crusaders' Emily Kutz scored on the ensuing penalty kick, spoiling Eagle goalkeeper Ilana Bar-av's shutout. Bar-av would face just two shots on goal, besides the penalty kick, and stopped both of them for her 12th win of the season.
The victory moved Edgewood College broke a fourth place tie with MSOE and secured a home game in Saturday's NAC Tournament opener. The Eagles will face those same Raiders, the last team to defeat Edgewood College. The Raiders won their first ever game over the Eagles, 2-0, on October 20.
