MADISON, Wis. – Heading into Monday's game, the Edgewood College women's soccer team still had an opportunity to host a Northern Athletics Conference Tournament game with a win and a tie in the final two matches. In wet conditions the Eagles played textbook soccer, taking the early lead over Dominican University, then playing solid defense to take the 1-0 victory to keep their hopes alive.
The Stars (8-8, 8-2 NAC) came out and started the game with a shot in the very first minute of the match, which was saved by Ilana Bar-av. After that shot, the Eagles (11-5-1, 7-2-1 NAC) moved play to the other end of the field, with their best opportunity to score coming off of a cross by Abby Moder. She sent the ball to the middle of the box where Kelsey Beck headed it towards the Star goal only to be turned away by Jacqui Lani, Dominican's goalkeeper.
After a Dominican shot, the Eagles pushed play down the field where Moder let another cross fly, this time to Tami Oilschlager. She possessed the ball then slid it back across field past Lani to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. Oilschlager's goal was her second in Edgewood College's last two games. The goals were also game winning goals, the first two game winning goals of her career.
After the first half was played in the Stars end of the field thanks to good Eagle pressure, the second half was played mostly on the Eagles end of the field. Dominican put pressure on Edgewood College as they recorded six of their nine shots in the second frame and held the Eagles without a shot. The Stars best chance to net the equalizer came in the 65th minute when Mary Hoemeyer took a free kick that was turned away by Bar-av.
For the match, Bar-av tallied seven saves and recorded her fifth shutout of the season. The shutout was also the 19th of her career which moved her into a tie for second on the all-time shutout list at Edgewood College.
The Eagles will be in action again on Thursday when they travel to Watertown to face Maranatha Baptist in their final regular season match. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. With a win or a tie, the Eagles will host the first round NAC Tournament game this weekend.
