MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's soccer team tried to avenge their season ending loss from a season ago when they faced UW-Stevens Point on Sunday. The Pointers did not let that happen as they came away with the 2-0 victory.
UW-Stevens Point (8-3-1) put pressure on the Eagles (8-4-1) early as they tallied four shots in the first 10 minutes. Their best opportunity came from 20 yards out as Jackie Spees ripped a shot that went just high as it glanced off the cross-bar.
Edgewood College then moved play to the other end of the field in what would be their best scoring opportunity of the day. In a five minute span the Eagles tallied four corner kicks and recorded their only three shots of the game. The best chance to score was off one of the corner kicks, Abby Moder headed a ball that went just right of the Pointer goal.
The Pointers took the lead in the 26th minute on Vicki Bieschke's sixth goal of the season. Off a corner kick, Bieschke took a ball that bounced off teammate Mary Jean Cornelius and deposited it into the top left corner of the net. UW-Stevens Point would tack on an insurance goal in the 58th minute as Kirsti Nickels took a cross from Jackie Spees and snuck it by Eagle goalkeeper Ilana Bar-av.
The Pointers outshot the Eagles 14-3 in the first half and 18-3 for the match, with 12 of the 18 shots being on net. For the Eagles, Bar-av recorded double digits in saves for the second time this season with 10, she tallied 12 earlier this season against Aurora University.
The Eagles will have the week off before facing Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m.
