Eagles place sixth in season's first tourney

HUTCHINSON, Minn. – The Edgewood College men's golf team finished sixth out of 17 teams with a score of 623 (+51) in their inaugural tournament of the 2008 season at Oakdale Golf Club over the weekend.

Mike Battista led the Eagles with a score of 152 (+9) placing him in a tie for tenth among the 92 competing golfers. Logan Kranz finished just one shot behind Battista as he tied for 12th overall while Aaron Gavin broke into the top-30 with a 158 and a 28th place finish.

Mark Fields and Glenn Nowell rounded out the scoring for Edgewood College as they each placed 50th and 60th, respectively.

Bethel University (597, +25) won the tournament by a convincing margin of 14 strokes over Gustavus Adolphus College. University of Wisconsin-Stout, University of St. Thomas and Augsburg College rounded out the top-5. Three of the five golfers that helped the Eagles to a solid finish in their first rounds of competitive this season were freshmen, including 2008 WIAA Division I State Champion Battista.

The Eagles' next tournament will be when they host the Culver's Edgewood College Fall Invitational September 13-14. The first round of competition will be played on Saturday at Glen Erin Golf Club in Janesville, Wis. Second round play will resume Sunday and will be moved to Yahara Golf Club in Madison, Wis.
