MADISON, Wis. - As long as the losing streak seemed for Edgewood College volleyball fans, it likely felt 10 times as long for the players and coaching staff. However, they won't need to worry about it anymore as the Eagles snapped their 13-match losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Finlandia University in the Edgewood College Triangular. The Eagles dropped their second match of the day 3-1 to Clarke College.
Edgewood College (4-14) got off to the strong start in the first set, that they had been looking for downing the Lions 25-18. After Finlandia (4-13) rallied to win the second set 25-19, the Eagles put the match way with 25-21 and 25-18 victories. Freshman Abbi Schultz had a team-high 12 kills and also dished out 18 assists. Kim Paskey has a team-best attack percentage of .276 with 11 kills and just three errors. Middle hitter Ashley Averkamp and outside hitter Dacy Swansby were a force at the net, recording nine and seven assisted blocks, respectively. Averkamp also put down seven kills of her own. Setter Hannah Williams had 26 assists.
In the Eagles second match, Clarke College (12-4) jumped out to early leads in the both of the first two sets. The Eagles would rally to cut the deficit, but the Crusadars posted a pair of 25-21 victories. Edgewood College stormed back in the third set, recording 14 kills for a 25-23 win. Schultz recorded the final kill of the set. However, the Eagles couldn't maintain their momentum into the fourth set, as Clarke ran ahead 20-12 and held on for a 25-18 win. Paskey had 12 kills against just two errors, hitting .400 for the match. Schultz and Aryn Wellnitz had 10 kills apiece. Libero Kim Lueck had a team-high 17 digs.
In the middle match of the day, Clarke College downed Finlandia University 3-0, with set scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-12.
Edgewood College takes to the road for their next contest, an NAC duel with Concordia University Wisconsin on Tuesday night.
