Eagles rally back but fall in five sets

WATERTOWN, Wis. - Down two sets to none on Maranatha Baptist's home floor it would have been easy for the Edgewood College volleyball team to fold. Instead, the Eagles responded by winning two sets, but couldn't maintain their momentum into the decisive fifth set, falling 3-2 in Watertown.

The Eagles (3-12, 0-2 NAC) rallied to win the third and fourth sets, taking them both beyond the 25-point mark. Edgewood College won 29-27 and 27-25 to force a fifth and decisive set. However, the Crusaders (8-4, 1-0 NAC) recovered in time for a 15-11 victory to seal the match.

The Eagles again struggled in the opening set, falling 25-12, before making a strong recovery in set two 25-22 setting the table for Edgewood College's near comeback.

Freshman Kristin Manske led the team with a season-high 15 kills, hitting .347 for the match. Abbi Schultz also hit double digits adding 10 kills against just one error. Freshman middle hitter Ashley Averkamp also notched a season-high with eight kills without committing an error. Sophomore libero Kim Lueck racked up 30 digs against the Crusaders.

Edgewood College will take the week of before returning to conference action next Wednesday. The Eagles will be at home to face Rockford College at 7:00 p.m. at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
