MADISON, Wis. (Apr. 9, 2008) - It happened 11 days later than planned, but the Edgewood College baseball team finally opened their 2008 home schedule. The Eagles downed Concordia University Wisconsin 16-6 in the opening game, before falling to the Falcons 7-4 in the nightcap on a chilly evening in Verona.
After spotting the Falcons three unearned runs in game one, the Eagles stormed back with runs in the final five innings to end the game by virtue of the 10-run rule. Ricky Martinez ignited the Edgewood College bats with a two-run home run to right field to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead in the fourth. Martinez finished the game three-for-five with three RBIs. Cory McCullick picked up three hits for his 10th multi-hit game of the season. Matt Werner and Jimy Landwehr each had a double. Cody Flynn (2-1) went six innings to earn his 21st career win extending his school record. Flynn struck out three and surrendered just two earned runs.
In the nightcap, the Edgewood College (10-9, 3-1 NAC) took a 2-1 lead, thanks to a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. However, the Eagles would return the favor to Concordia Wisconsin (12-6, 5-1 NAC) in the sixth inning, committing two errors which led to two Falcon runs. In the bottom of the seventh the Eagles trimmed the lead to 5-4, when Landwehr hit an RBI double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Falcons picked up a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning and held on to win. Nathan Marlowe (1-3) took the loss despite giving up just one earned run in six and one-third innings. Matt Shilney, Ryan Siebert and Alex Elliot each two hits.
Edgewood College will be back in action this weekend with a Saturday doubleheader at Dominican University, before returning home to face MSOE on Sunday at Noon.
