PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (April 16, 2008) - When the UW-Platteville baseball team opened the door, Edgewood College burst through with everything they had. The Eagles used a seven-run fifth inning to erase a 4-1 Pioneer lead, stunning the home team on the way to a 10-4 non-conference victory at Kendall Murray Field in Platteville.
UW-Platteville jumped ahead in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs due in part to two Eagles errors. Steve Binder got a run back for the Eagles with his first RBI double of the game in the second inning. After the Pioneers tacked on their fourth run of the game in the third inning, the contest turned in the top of the fifth.
Edgewood College (14-10) put runners on the corners with two outs, when Matt Shilney lined out to third baseman Lee Hawkins. Hawkins tried to throw across the diamond to double Justin Dahmen off first, but his throw went wild allowing Karl Reynolds to score from the third. The next two batters reached to load the bases and another error on the Pioneers plated another Eagle. Andrew King then added an RBI single and Binder followed with a two-run double. The Eagles scored seven runs in the frame to take an 8-4 lead. In all, nine of the Eagles 10 runs were unearned, thanks to six errors on UW-Platteville (11-12).
Lost in the come-from-behind victory was a strong pitching performance by Matt Krueger. Krueger threw his second consecutive complete game, this time going nine innings. He gave up just one earned run on nine hits, striking out four and walking two. Dahmen extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his first career four-hit game and stole two bases. Binder went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a team-high three RBIs. Cory McCullick and Andrew King also had two hits.
Edgewood College has a pair of important NAC doubleheaders this weekend, when they face Benedictine University at home on Saturday and travel to Aurora University on Sunday.
