MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Apr.14, 2008) - Edgewood College discovered the best way to advance around the bases at Neumann Family Field was to do it two at a time. The Eagles smacked 13 doubles, including nine in the first game to sweep a doubleheader from Wisconsin Lutheran College by scores of 10-2 and 14-2. Ryan Siebert led the doubles party with a pair of two baggers in each game.
The Eagles had to bide their time in game one as the Warriors stayed close at 2-2 through four innings. RBI doubles by Siebert in the fifth and Matt Werner in the sixth gave Edgewood College (12-9, 5-1 NAC) a 4-2 lead and set the stage for an eighth inning explosion. After a Ricky Martinez double and a pair of walks loaded the bases, Steve Binder was hit by a pitch to drive home the Eagles' fifth run. Karl Reynolds then plated two runs with a double of his own, and scored on a wild pitch. Justin Dahmen added a sacrifice fly, before Siebert finished the inning with another RBI double, driving home their sixth run of the inning and forging a 10-2 lead.
Cody Flynn (3-1) threw seven solid innings scattering nine Wisconsin Lutheran (2-19, 1-10 NAC) singles. Flynn, Edgewood College's all-time wins leader, allowed one earned run and struck out six. Bill Dictus pitched the final two innings in relief. Siebert finished the game 3-for-5 and Alex Berta had two doubles in four at-bats.
In the second game, the Eagles took to the base paths, swiping eight bases and establishing an 8-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Reynolds had a two-run single to highlight the second inning. Siebert had yet another RBI double for a run in the fifth inning, and Dahmen stole home plate for Edgewood College's third run of the sixth. In the ninth inning, the Eagles bench got into the action as Alex Elliot drove in two runs with a single and Adam Victorn knocked in a third run.
Coming off a one-hit shutout of Maranatha Baptist, Kyle Lode (2-1) went eight innings and didn't allow an earned run in picking up his second win of the year. Lode struck out three and walked two. James Bertakis threw a perfect ninth inning to end the game. Siebert, Shilney, Elliot and Berta all had two hits in the second game, with Shilney driving in three runs. Corey McCullick and Dahmen swiped two bases apiece, while Reynolds stole three bases.
Edgewood College will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader at Dominican University in Schaumburg, Ill.
