Eagles split pair of games with Hamline

Matt Shilney

MINNEAPOLIS (Mar. 9, 2008) - Edgewood College baseball team posted more than 10 runs in a game for the first time this season, but struggled in the field to finish with a weekend split with Hamline University. The Eagles claimed the first game 11-10, but committed six errors in the second game and lost 16-5 at the H.H.H. Metrodome in Minneapolis.

In the first game, the Eagles broke open a 5-5 tie with a six-run fifth inning. Ryan Siebert started the rally with a double to left field and Jimy Landwehr moved him up to third with a bunt single. Siebert scored on a Hamline error and Landwehr crossed the plate on Steve Binder's bases loaded walk. Alex Berta and Matt Shilney also added RBI singles in the frame.

Edgewood College had to hold on in the bottom of seventh as Hamline's Andrew Bennett hit a three-run home run to cut the lead to 11-9. Rick Walsh then entered the game for the Eagles and, after surrendering an RBI single to Lincoln Hughes, he coaxed Tony Rogers into a fielder's choice ground ball to end the game and earn his first save of the year. Matt Krueger pitched three and one-third innings to earn the win in relief.

Shilney finished the game three-for-four with a pair of RBIs. Berta went two-for-five and knocked in three runs. Cory McCullick also added a pair of hits.

In the second game, the problems for the Eagles began in the field as four straight errors led to five unearned runs for the Pipers in the second inning. Trouble continued to mount in the third, as Hamline stroked seven consecutive singles and piled up a commanding 12-0 lead after three innings. Matt Werner drive home a pair of runs with a single in the Eagles' fourth inning, but the Pipers closed the door on any comeback with a four-run sixth inning.

Bill Dictus picked up the loss for the Eagles. McCullick went two-for-four with a triple in the second game.

The Eagles are now 2-4 on the season and will head south for their next nine games. They will play Piedmont College and LaGrange College in Georgia before heading to the Central Florida Invitational Tournament from March 17-22 in Orlando.
