ORLANDO, Fla. (Mar. 17, 2008) - Dan Gugel drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to push across the winning run and give Edgewood College their first victory on their spring break trip 4-3 over Endicott College (Mass.). The Eagles won the game despite being out-hit by the Gulls 13-3.
Ryan Siebert open the bottom of the ninth with a double to left center and was replaced by pinch-runner Treye Dennison. After Karl Reynolds was hit by a pitch, Alex Berta moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Matt Werner was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Steven Binder had the Eagles' first chance to win the game, but was called out for interference at the plate. Finally, with two outs, Gugel drew a walk from Gulls' pitcher Adam Labbe to force Dennison home with the winning run.
Edgewood College (3-7) picked up two runs in the first inning without the benefit of a hit, thanks to two walks, a passed ball a Matt Shilney sacrifice fly and an Endicott College (1-2) error. Binder gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead in the seventh with a RBI double to drive home Berta.
Matt Krueger pitched eight solid innings, allowing two earned runs striking out six and walking one, while scattering 13 hits. Adam Victorn pitched a perfect top of the ninth and claimed the win. Siebert, Binder and Berta had the only three hits for the Eagles.
The Eagles are now 1-4 on their spring break trip and 1-0 at the Central Florida Invitational Tournament. Edgewood College will face Grove City College (Pa.) in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
