DEMOREST, Ga. (Mar. 13, 2008) - Edgewood College had a tall task in front of them, playing the 17th-ranked team in the country on their home field a day after a 14 hour bus ride from Madison. The Eagles kept the Piedmont College bats in check for much of the game, but a four-run third inning helped propel the Lions to a 5-2 victory at Loudermilk Field.
Trouble began for Edgewood College in the third inning when starting pitcher Cody Flynn, already trailing 1-0, allowed four singles, a walk and was called for a pair of balks leading to a 5-0 Lion lead. Edgewood College (2-5) fought back in the sixth when Alex Berta scored on a throwing error by the shortstop following a Matt Werner single. The Eagles picked up another run in the eighth when a Werner single drove home Treye Dennison, who was pinch-running following a leadoff double by Matt Shilney.
Bill Dictus went to the mound in the fourth inning and held Piedmont College (15-3) without a hit for the remainder of the game. Dictus struck out seven and walked two. Flynn picked up the loss for the Eagles and is still one win from becoming Edgewood College's all-time victory leader. Werner had three singles notching the third three-hit game of his career.
The Eagles will be in action again Friday night and Saturday afternoon with a pair of games at LaGrange College.
