Eagles drop fourth straight game

Brian Donais

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (Feb. 20, 2008) – Edgewood College battled back from a 15-point first half deficit, to tie the game, but could not maintain their momentum into the second half, falling to Marian College 89-75. The loss, the Eagles fourth in a row, drops Edgewood College into a three-way tie for seventh place with one conference game remaining. The top eight teams qualify for the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament.

Marian College (15-9, 12-5 NAC) started the game by rolling out to a 24-9 lead, only to see the Eagles tie the game at 38 with just over two minutes left in the first half. Brian Donais and Chris DeMarco each scored eight points in that run, with Donais nailing back-to-back three-point baskets and DeMarco turning a steal into a conventional three-point play. However, the Sabres made four of their 11 three-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the second half to open up a 71-56 lead and were never threatened again.

Chris DeMarco led Edgewood College (12-12, 9-8 NAC) in scoring for the 14th time this season totaling 18 points on seven-for-12 shooting. Brian Donais was perfect from the three-point line going four-for-four and finishing with 14 points. Senior Charlie Averkamp, playing in his 100th career game for the Eagles, scored eight points. Edgewood College shot 52 percent (26-for-50) from the field, marking the fifth straight game they have shot 50 percent or better.

Marian College was led by Jerid Holewinski who torched the Eagles for 31 points, including four three-point baskets. The Sabres put five players in double figures and shot 62.2 percent (28-for-45) from the field, the highest percentage any opponent has shot against Edgewood College this season.

The Eagles must wait until Saturday to try and clinch a spot in the NAC Tournament. They can earn one of the two remaining berths with a win over Rockford College at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. Tipoff is at 4:15 p.m. and the game can be heard live at EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
