Scheele scores 27 in Eagles' first win

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – In search of their first win of the season, the Edgewood College women's basketball team used an 11-0 second half run to pull away from Marian University and break into the winning column. The Eagles forced 30 Sabre turnovers in claiming a 59-47 victory.

Edgewood College led throughout the majority of the first half leading by as many as seven after a pair of Susan Paskey free throws made it 13-6. Twice Marian trimmed the Eagles' lead to one point, including a three-pointer by Brooke Haen with eight seconds left that made the score 27-26 at halftime.

Marian would reclaim the lead early in the second half, but it would be short lived. After trading the lead back and forth three times, the Eagles took command. Trailing by one, senior Megan Scheele scored three baskets, Shae Beckwith hit a three-pointer and Ashley Averkamp scored inside to cap an 11-0 run and give the Eagles a 46-36 lead.

Marian would cut the lead to 50-45 with 5:57 to play, but Janelle Gosh would hit a big three-pointer on the next possession to push the lead back to eight points. The Sabres would score just one more basket the rest of the game.

Scheele, a second team pre-season All-American, turned in her top performance of the season pouring in 27 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end of the floor. Scheele also had a game-high four steals. Beckwith joined Scheele in double figures, hitting three three-pointers to finish with 12 points. Sophomore point guard Amber Hemp played all 40 minutes and finished with a game-high five assists. The 47 points allowed was the best defensive effort of the season for Edgewood College (1-4, 1-1 NAC) who entered the game, allowing 74.5 point per contest.

Marian University (1-3, 0-1 NAC) was led by Haen who scored 13 points. Ashley Mueller pulled down 12 rebounds for the Sabres.

Edgewood College will play the second of their three-game road trip on Saturday at Aurora University. The Eagles and Spartans will tip off at 2:00 p.m.
