APPLETON, Wis. – The Eagle women dropped a tough one in the rain on Tuesday as non-conference foe Lawrence came away with the 2-1 upset win on its home turf.
Edgewood College (9-3) went into the match in blazing fashion having outscored its opponents 13-1 in the two games previous and claiming the nation's leading scorer and top assist player in Elaine Gerry and Elyse Clouthier, respectively, as their own. But the Eagles couldn't capture a victory against a team that entered with just three wins.
In fact, it was Lawrence's Amelia Lerch that got her team on the board first with a goal in the 39th minute. That goal stood through halftime to keep the Vikings (4-7) in front.
In the second half, the Eagles responded with a Kelsey Beck goal in the 63rd minute off a feed from Tammi Hagensick to tie the game at one-goal-a-piece.
Despite trailing for the majority of the match, Edgewood College actually maintained control of the game, but just struggled to push through the Viking defense. The Eagles outshot its counterpart 12-10 and gained six corner kicks while allowing none.
Late in the game, it seemed as if Edgewood College may come out with a tie or even have a chance at pulling out a win in overtime until Natalie Jin made her presence felt.
The freshman gathered a rebound off of a Ilana Bar-av save and place in the back of the net in the 84th minute of play. The goal stood and Lawrence came out the victors.
Edgewood College will play its final road game this Saturday against Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee. Kick off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
