MADISON, Wis. – The rain subsided at Breese Stevens Field Wednesday night, at least for one side, as Edgewood College poured a 4-0 shutout on to Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Elyse Clouthier scored two first half goals and Ilana Bar-av made a season-high eight saves in the Eagles' blowout win and their fourth straight conference win.
Brittany Drewiske got the scoring started with her second goal of the season in the fourth minute. Drewiske took a Tammi Hagensick corner that was flicked ahead by Angela Colletti and knew exactly what to do with it as she stood directly in front of the goal.
Edgewood College (11-3, 7-1 NAC) controlled the field brilliantly as they earned 11 corner kicks and surrendered just one. In a game that was decided early, the Eagles continued to apply the pressure against an above average Northern Athletics Conference opponent.
Less than six minutes after Drewiske's goal, Clouthier got into the act for her first goal of the game. It was Colletti again with the flick ahead and assist to the Eagles' second leading scorer and Clouthier snuck the ball inside the right post and past the MSOE keeper.
The recognition opponents have of Elaine Gerry's 30 goals this season has forced them to mark the freshman forward with more than one defender at times. That, in turn, provides open lanes to the goal for her teammates and it was evident in the Eagle's win over MSOE (9-6, 4-4 NAC) on Wednesday night.
Clouthier utilized those openings and added her seventh goal of the season in the 26th minute on a lead pass from Laura Marx. The assist was Marx's ninth of the year which is second on the team behind Clouthier's 11. Marx scored her first goal of the season in the 65th minute thanks to Melinda Schwab's cross in the 18-yard box.
Marx's goal is her first since scoring two back on October 22, 2007, ironically, against MSOE. The win on Wednesday allowed the Eagles to remain undefeated against the Raiders in all 21 matches between the two teams all-time. Edgewood College also starts the season unbeaten in its first seven home matches. It's the first time they've done that since going through the 1999 home schedule a perfect 12-0.
The Eagles' next game will be Friday against UW-Whitewater. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 p.m. at the friendly confines of Breese Stevens Field.
