VERONA, Wis. – A yellow card on the Spartans in the box in the 75th minute changed everything on Sunday afternoon in a conference battle between Edgewood University and Aurora University. Riley Haertle netted her second penalty kick of the season to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining. The Eagles claimed their second-straight conference win, a 1-0 final over the Spartans.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A penalty kick goal off the foot of Riley Haertle gave Edgewood University (2-4-1, 2-0-0 NACC) the lead in the 75th minute on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles put the pressure on the Spartans defense in the second half, taking 14 shots and putting 10 on target. Through the first 30 minutes of the second half, Edgewood University put five shots on target.
- Edgewood University started the contest with control slowly worked past the Aurora University (1-5-0, 0-2-0 NACC) defense. Stephanie Kalscheuer, Riley Haertle, Megan Hines, Maude Spagnolo-Salisbury, and Jerzey Ladwig each forced Aurora goalkeeper Leila Connor to make saves to hold the Eagles off the scoreboard through the first 45 minutes.
- Many of the Eagles opportunities came in transition, with only two corner kicks per team on Sunday afternoon.
- Edgewood University outshot Aurora 23-8 on the afternoon. The Eagles put 16 shots on target, with nine 10 coming in the second half.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Haertle scored her second goal of the season, her first came via penalty kick at Lakeland on Wednesday.
- Stephanie Kalscheuer posted six shots, three on target.
- Annika Hudson, Megan Hines, Haertle, and Sarah Bolchen each recorded three shots in the NACC matchup.
- Madeline Brown went the distance in net for the Eagles, recording five saves.
