DUBUQUE, IOWA – Women's Tennis kicked off their 2026-27 season down in Iowa Saturday. They faced off with the Dubuque Spartans and the Loras Duhawks. The Spartans (1-0) bested the Eagles (0-2) 6-1, while the Duhawks (1-0) outlasted the visitors in a 4-3 thriller.
 
MATCH ONE: DUBUQUE 6, EDGEWOOD UNIVERSITY 1
The Spartans took down Maya Connaughty and Gabrielle Schmidtmann 6-1 to open doubles. Hattie Plenty/Sophia Perret and Isabella Kowalak/Kaitlyn Narkis fell by identical 6-4 margins.
 
- Plenty conceded a 6-1, 6-2 result in top singles. Kowalak fell to a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) rally in the second slot.
 
- Narkis bounced back with a strong 6-3, 6-4 showing in third singles. Perret dropped no. 4 singles 6-3, 6-1.
 
- Schmidtmann lost a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) heartbreaker in the fifth slot. Connaughty fell 6-0, 6-1 in sixth billing.
 
MATCH TWO: LORAS 4, EDGEWOOD UNIVERSITY 3
- The Eagles started strong in doubles. Plenty/Perret won 7-5 in top billing, while Kowalak/Narkis earned a 6-3 result in the second slot.
 
- Schmidtmann/Connaughty dropped a 6-3 final in no. 3 doubles.
 
- The Duhawks got back on track in singles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Plenty in top singles and a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Kowalak in the second slot.
 
- Narkis's rally in third singles fell short 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9). Perret kept a strong match going with a 6-2, 6-2 result in no. 4 singles.
 
- Schmidtmann came up clutch in the fifth slot. She tied the match at 3-3 with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) tiebreaker victory. Sarah Emory dropped a 6-3, 6-1 result in no. 6 singles.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Schmidtmann's tiebreak victory in singles against Loras was her first win at Edgewood University.
 
- Kowalak's victory alongside Narkis in doubles against the Duhawks was her first win as an Eagle.
 
UP NEXT
NACC action opens at home next Saturday. The Eagles will play host to the MSOE Raiders and Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors at Madison West High School. First serve is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
