First Quarter Attack lifts Eagles past Rams in NACC battle

VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood University men's lacrosse team got off to a quick start on Thursday evening, scoring seven times in the first quarter in a 17-13 win over Cornell College. Zach Thomas lit up the scoreboard, scoring eight times and tying single-game program records for goals and points. Zane Neville backed the Eagles defense with a single-game record six caused turnovers in the conference victory on Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- A whopping seven goals gave Edgewood University (3-10, 3-6 NACC) a 7-2 lead after the first 15 minutes on Thursday evening. Maddux Ptasienski, assisted by Gavin Williams got the Eagles going with back-to-back goals in the first three minutes. Cornell College (3-10, 1-8 NACC) scored twice in sixth minute to tie the game a two goals apiece. Thomas got the Eagles back on track with two goals for a 4-2 lead.

- Thomas continued to roll, scoring twice in the second quarter to put the Eagles up 9-2 with 12:15 remaining before halftime. The Rams would score four times before the break, but a goal from Demetri Singto with 1:15 remaining helped the Eagles to a 10-6 advantage after two quarters of play.

- Both the Eagles and Rams scored four times in the third quarter and three times in the fourth quarter. Logan Searles did well to keep the Eagles on track, making nine saves in the final two quarters.

TOP PERFORMERS
- Thomas led the Eagles with eight goals and three assists. Thomas added six ground balls.

- Williams scored three times and dished out two assists.

- Borgardt dished out three assists and scored twice.

- Zane Neville caused six turnovers and collected seven ground balls.

- Logan Searles collected 19 caused turnovers in net for the Eagles.

THE OPPOSITION
- Tyler Foster led the Rams with three goals and one assist.

- Alexander Dukatz found the back of the net three times.

- Charley Kobets dished out a team-high three assists.

- Ben Wojewski went 26-for-32 at the faceoff and collected 13 ground balls.

- Nathan Diveley recorded 13 saves in net for the Rams.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Thomas is the sixth Eagle to reach 100 points in his career. Thomas also reached 100 ground balls in his career.

- Neville set a new single-game record for caused turnovers, with six. He bests the previous mark of five caused turnovers set by Alex Maurer against Northland on March 23, 2022.

- Thomas tied single-game records for points (11) and goals (8) set by Lake Rewey against Concordia Chicago on April 22, 2023.

- Edgewood University will travel to Concordia Wisconsin on Saturday. Action is set for 12:00 p.m. from Mequon, Wis.
