Carroll outlasts Eagles in non-conference battle

VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood University men's lacrosse team fell to Carroll University 10-9 on Saturday. The Eagles had a strong start, leading 5-4 at halftime but were unable to slow down the Pioneers in the third quarter. Zach Thomas, Gavin Williams, and Maddux Ptasienski led the Eagles attack, while Logan Searles locked down the Eagles defense in net.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood University (0-3) opened the game with two early goals. Joseph Wojcik netted the first Eagle goal, assisted by Thomas. Three minutes later, Ptasienski scored an unassisted goal to put the Eagles up 2-0. Carroll University (2-5) responded with a trio of goals to take a 3-2 lead. With 1:01 remaining in the quarter, Thomas netted his first goal of the day to tie the contest at three a piece.

- The majority of the second quarter was quiet from both sides. The Eagles netted a pair of man-up goals in the final 10 minutes of the quarter to take a 5-3 lead. The Pioneers scored just before halftime to trail by one goal at the break.

- Carroll came out of halftime scoring three-straight goals for a 7-5 lead. The Edgewood University attack struggled in the third quarter, only scoring once. The Pioneers would total four goals in the third quarter and take an 8-6 advantage into the final quarter.

- Edgewood University put up three goals in the final quarter, but the Pioneers responded at every turn to hold on to the victory. With just 1:44 left on the clock, Williams netted his second goal of the game, but it was too little too late for the Eagles.

- Searles was key in the contest for the Eagles defense, making 18 saves. The junior posted six saves alone in the third quarter.

- The Carroll faceoff was dominant on Saturday, only allowing the Eagles to win three.

TOP PERFORMERS
- Thomas led the Eagles attack with two goals and two assists. He added eight ground balls and two caused turnovers.

- Williams Ptasienski each posted two goals for the Eagles.

- Borgardt dished out two assists and scored once. He added three caused turnovers.

- Zane Neville caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls.

- Searles recorded a season-best 18 saves on Saturday.

THE OPPOSITION
- Zach Szuba led the Pioneers with three goals.

- Brady Conwell dished out a game-high four assists.

- Jake Wright went 20-for-22 at the faceoff and led the Pioneers with 17 ground balls.

- Jonas Malmanger posted 10 saves in his first win of the season.

- Edgewood University will travel to Trine University on Saturday, March 14. Action is set for 12:00 p.m. (ET) from Angola, Ind.
