VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood University men's lacrosse team hosted Benedictine University in conference play on Saturday afternoon. The visiting Eagles took home the victory with a 15-8 final score. Edgewood University raised awareness and proceeds for the Appendix Cancer PMP Research Foundation.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a strong five goal start from Benedictine (6-3, 2-2 NACC) in the first quarter, Edgewood University (1-7, 1-3 NACC) battled back with four goals in the second quarter to tie the contest at six goals apiece going into halftime.
- James Borgardt and Wyatt Heabel netted back-to-back goals in the second quarter to put Edgewood University within one goal 5-4 of Benedictine. Jack Whalon of Benedictine scored at the 10:49 mark for a 6-4 advantage to the visitors. Gavin Williams converted a pass from Zach Thomas for the fifth goal for Edgewood University. With 9:20 remaining before the break, Demetri Singto found the back of the net to tie the contest.
- Benedictine came out of the break on with a new fire, scoring seven-straight goals and holding Edgewood University scoreless in the third quarter.
- Edgewood University scored twice in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to take home the win.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Borgardt led Edgewood University with four goals and one assist.
- Thomas dished out a team-high two assists and added two caused turnovers.
- Logan Searles managed 21 saves on the afternoon. 11 saves came in the second half.
- Ryan Hanrahan posted four caused turnovers and added three ground balls.
- Heabel scored twice for Edgewood University.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood University men's lacrosse honored the life of Michael Madeja, father of player Mike Madeja on Saturday. Michael was a warrior against cancer, and his strength, loyalty, and heart will always be a part of the Edgewood University men's lacrosse program.
THE OPPOSITION
- AJ Smerz led Benedictine with three goals.
- Jack Whalon went 15-for-17 at the faceoff adding a goal.
- Ben Sochaki scored three times and added an assist.
- Aiden Elliot and Dylan Langley each scored twice and added an assist.
- Owen Johnson posted 16 saves in the win in net.
