No. 8 Hawks ground Eagles in high octane affair

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Men's Volleyball played their first of two matches out east Monday. They took on the SUNY New Paltz Hawks. The Hawks (19-5), ranked #8 in the latest AVCA poll, won an offensive showcase against the Eagles (7-11).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- While the squads exchanged small leads early, three unanswered from SUNY New Paltz had the hosts ahead 16-12. A later 4-1 rally pushed the Hawks ahead 21-15 as they never looked back.
 
- SUNY New Paltz carried momentum into the second frame, opening things up on a 4-1 run. Edgewood University had the wind at their backs late, a 6-1 rally pulling them within 18-17. Back-to-back points would help the Hawks find breathing room on route to a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
- After exchanging several small runs early, the two teams found themselves tied up 10-10 as the Eagles looked to stay alive in the match. A 4-0 rally propelled SUNY New Paltz up 16-12, but a 6-2 reply from Edgewood University had the teams settled back into an 18-18 tie. Three in a row from the Eagles late put them ahead 22-20. The Hawks would not be denied, their defense propelling a 5-0 burst to close the set and match.
 
- SUNY New Paltz won the hitting battle .313-to-.268 and had an 8-to-2 edge in aces. Edgewood University posted a 9-to-1 advantage in blocks.
 
- Oakley Griggs and Cade Schueller had 10 kills apiece.
 
- Ethan Hoffert posted 26 assists while Owen Hartjes held down the fort at the net with six blocks.
 
- Matt Teplansky was a key difference maker for the Hawks with 14 kills and four aces.
 
- Matt Maruza anchored a high-flying SUNY New Paltz offense with 34 assists.

The Eagles will take on the Kean Cougars tomorrow as they wrap up their Spring Break trip. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 Eastern time in Union, N.J.
