MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood University women's basketball team combined a team effort on both sides of the ball to complete the season sweep over Rockford University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles defeated the Regents 78-35 to open Jam the Gym in the Todd Wehr Edgedome. A career-effort from Kylee Lonigro and Payton Grenzer, combined with double-digit scoring from Laci Lindsey gave the Eagles their 10th conference victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Through the first 10 minutes, Edgewood University (11-10, 10-4 NACC) led Rockford University (1-20, 2-12 NACC) 15-10. A three-point make from McKenna Reilly in the second quarter started 12-0 run that put the Eagle lead into double-digits. Kylee Lonigro joined Reilly on the three-point train with 9:10 remaining before halftime. Londyn Holewinski, Ava Berg, and Clare Allison contributed to five three-point makes and 47.6 percent (10-for-21) shooting from the floor for the Eagles in the second quarter. At the break, the Eagles had extended their lead to 21 points (41-20).
- Coming out of the break, the Eagles defense held the Regents to 0 percent (0-for-9) shooting from the floor and just six points, which came from the free-throw line. In contrast, the Eagles shot 47.1 percent (8-for-17) from the floor and scored 19 points. Lonigro's career-night continued in the final minute of the third quarter, with a three-point make to give the Eagles a 34 point (60-26) advantage.
- Edgewood University held Rockford to just nine points in the final quarter. Payton Grenzer and Kylee Lonigro dominated the quarter, scoring all 18 of the Eagles points.
- Edgewood University dominated the rebounding game, pulling down 51 rebounds, 23 coming on the offensive side of the ball.
- The Eagles did well to take care of the ball, only turning the ball over seven times, a season best for Edgewood University.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Lonigro posted 18 points to lead the Eagles in just 15 minutes on the court. The sophomore was unstoppable, going 7-for-8 from the floor and 4-for-5 from three-point range.
- Grenzer and Lindsey both netted 10 points for the Eagles.
- Grenzer and Grace Vesperman both pulled down seven rebounds, while Lindsey contributed six boards.
- Vesperman dished out a team-high seven assists, while Taylor Wollin added six assists and Clare Allison collected four assists of her own.
THE OPPOSITION
- Nia Wilkerson and Te Simpson scored in double-digits for the Regents. Simpson netted a team-high 18 points, while Wilkerson scored 13 points.
- Simpson led the Regents in rebounding with seven, while Theresa McCarver pulled down five rebounds.
- Haylee West posted a game-high four blocks.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Lonigro recorded a career-best 18 points on Saturday.
- Grenzer came away with career-bests in points (10) and rebounds (7).
- Vesperman dished out a career-high seven assists.
