MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood University women's basketball team locked down their ninth conference victory of the season in a 64-50 final from the Todd Wehr Edgedome on Wednesday. Grace Vesperman and Laci Lindsey led the Eagles attack in double-digit shooting in the home victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams got off to a slow start on Wednesday evening, as the first three minutes went scoreless from Madison. Taylor Wollin broke through in the with 7:04 on the clock with a pair of free throws to put Edgewood University (10-10, 9-4 NACC) on the scoreboard. Despite the slow start, the Eagles managed 20 points in the first quarter. Londyn Holewinsi, Wollin and Payton Grenzer combined for the Eagles final 12 points of the quarter, giving Edgewood University a 20-6 advantage.
- Marian University (2-18, 2-11 NACC) responded with an 18 point second quarter on Wednesday evening. The Sabres shot a game-best 37.5 percent (6-for-16) from the floor in the second quarter and outscored the Eagles by five points. Despite being outscored in the second quarter, Edgewood University led 33-24 into halftime.
- The Eagles tacked on their second 20-point quarter of the evening after the break. A trio of three-point makes, combined with strong free-throw shooting lifted the Eagles to an 18 point advantage (53-35) heading into the final quarter.
- Grace Vesperman, Kylee Lonigro and McKenna Reilly each drained a three-pointer to open scoring for the Eagles in the fourth quarter. Reilly's make from long range with 7:39 remaining, gave the Eagles a comfortable 25 point (62-37) lead. Four different Eagles scored in the final 10 minutes for the Eagles.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Vesperman led the Eagles with 11 points. The senior added three assists.
- Wollin did a bit of everything on Wednesday evening, scoring seven points, pulling down six rebounds, dishing out five assists, and collecting three steals.
- Lindsey netted 10 points, pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and collected three blocks.
THE OPPOSITION
- Chelsea King led the Sabres with 17 points, six rebounds and four steals.
- Emily Eastham pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
- Taycee Schwanke scored nine points, going 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.
