Sabres rally to knock down Eagles in overtime

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Men's Basketball continued their NACC road trip Wednesday. They headed north to take on the Marian Sabres. While sharp shooting in the first half had the Eagles (3-16, 3-10 NACC) rolling, the Sabres (11-9, 7-6) rallied to force overtime and earn a 97-93 victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A trio of threes, two from Hunter Hardyman, had Edgewood University flying high 16-9 at 15:44. The Sabres would battle back to a 22-22 draw at 11:01, but 13 unanswered from the Eagles put them in a commanding 35-22 position with 7:16 remaining. Edgewood University would steadily build on the edge, heading into the locker room up 52-32.
 
- The Eagles impressed on offense in the first half, shooting 67.86 (19-of-28) percent from the field and 75 (9-of-12) percent from beyond the arc.
 
- The Sabres defense responded in the second half, bringing Edgewood University down to earth as they put together a 23-11 stretch to cut their deficit down to 63-55 with 10:40 left. With the Eagles leading 75-66 with 4:30 left, a 10-3 burst would pull Marian within 78-76 with 2:11 remaining. The Sabres would pull even in the waning moments, scoring four unanswered off of free throws to send the game into overtime.
 
- Seven straight points to start the extra period had Marian well ahead of Edgewood University. The visitors struggled for answers as the Sabres completed an impressive comeback.
 
- Marian held a critical 18-to-2 edge in second chance points. They held the Eagles to no three pointers in the second half.
 
- Derek Lindert finished with 25 points to lead four double-digit Sabres. Marvin Haslett added 22 points.
 
- Alex Vassilakis posted a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double. Andrew Ayeni rounded out the group with 15 points.
 
- Hardyman impressed, leading all scorers with 28 points.
 
- Trent Tousana tallied 14 points and eight assists in the defeat. Payton Bowser added 13 points.
 
- Logan Steffensmeier recorded 12 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Hardyman's 28 points were a career best and the most by any individual Eagle in a game this season.
 
- Tousana's eight assists were a new high watermark for his career and for any Edgewood University player this season.
 
- Steffensmeier's nine rebounds and six assists were career highs.
 
UP NEXT
The Eagles will look to rebound as they return home to the Todd Wehr Edgedome Saturday. They'll square off with the Rockford Regents for Jam the Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
