JACKSON, Miss. – Baseball wrapped up their stay down south with a doubleheader against the Millsaps Majors Saturday. An eight-run ninth inning from the Eagles (1-2) propelled them to a frenetic 16-9 victory in game one. In game two, the Majors (3-3) bounced back with a strong start for a 9-5 victory and the series win.
GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD UNIVERSITY 16, MILLSAPS 9
- After
Hayden Hellenbrand hit an RBI groundout to third base in the first, the Eagles pieced together an explosive five-run second inning. After a passed ball plated a run, a fielder's choice from
Jacob Carney tacked on another. Hellenbrand added on another RBI with a single to center field before
Aidan Kammer wrapped up the inning with a two-RBI single.
- Home plate went quiet until the Majors found momentum. A pair of RBI doubles to the outfield in the fifth got Millsaps on the board, before a single up the middle and a double to right center helped the Majors close within 6-4 after six.
- A
Dominic Lee single to left field brought in a pair of runners to extend the Edgewood University lead in the seventh, but the Eagles found themselves in trouble in the eighth. A bases loaded walk followed by a sacrifice fly to center piece tacked on a pair of Millsaps runs. A three-run double down the left field line put the Eagles in a do-or-die top of the ninth down 9-8.
- Edgewood University responded with fireworks.
Sam Steies evened the game with an RBI single up the middle, before a
Carter Kelley bunt coupled with a miscue from the Majors pushed them ahead 11-9. After a bases-loaded walk from Kammer added an insurance run,
Mac Vesperman all but put away the game with a towering grand slam to right field.
-
George Gouriotis had an excellent bottom of the ninth to put the finishing touches on the victory. He faced four batters and shut down Millsaps to clinch the win.
- The Eagles had 15 hits in the high-octane affair with nine batters recording a hit.
Connor Mirocha paced the group with three hits.
- Kelley hit 2-for-3 with three walks, while
Kyle Prindle tallied a pair of free passes and three runs.
-
Kris Hahn shined in the start. He tossed 6.1 innings, allowing a pair of earned runs.
GAME TWO: MILLSAPS 9, EDGEWOOD UNIVERSITY 5
- The Majors bats got rolling early in the second inning. An RBI triple to left center plated a run, before a two-run homer to left field left things 3-0 after two. A bases loaded walk and a bases-loaded ground out in the fourth pushed the edge to 5-0.
- The Eagles came to life in the fifth.
Dominic Lee launched a solo home run to right field to kick things off, before Edgewood University took advantage of a wild pitch to plate another. A Prindle sacrifice grounder followed by a Carney sacrifice fly put the Eagles within a run after the top of the fifth.
- Millsaps started to pull away once more. A single to shortstop and a single through the right side in the fifth added a pair of runs, while a two-run home run to right field sent in two runs for a 9-4 edge after eight. While Kelley would have a solo home run of his own in the ninth, the Majors put the game and series to bed.
- Thomas Temple and EJ Ousley were key parts of the Millsaps lineup. Temple hit 4-for-5 with a pair of triples and a home run on top of three RBIs. Ousley finished the game hitting 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
- Sam Thomas shined in a long relief outing, earning the victory with six strikeouts while allowing two hits and one run in five innings pitched.
