MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Baseball kicked off their southern road trip Friday in Alabama. They took on the Alma Scots in nonconference action. The Eagles (2-2) used an explosive 22-hit day to take down the Scots (6-3-1) 16-6 in eight innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams kicked off the scoring early. After a two-RBI single to left field and a wild pitch plated three for Alma, Edgewood University responded in kind with an
Aidan Kammer RBI single to the shortstop and a
Mac Vesperman single through the right side to trail 3-2 after one. The Scots would tally one with a sacrifice grounder to shortstop in the second, but a balk added another for the Eagles for a 4-3 Alma lead after two.
- The Edgewood University defense locked in, allowing only two more runs the rest of the way, while the offense took over. Kammer stole third and came home after an error by the catcher in the third, but a five-run fourth followed by a three-run fifth broke the game wide open. A wild pitch kicked off the fourth inning rally, but
Kyle Prindle sent a two-run home run flying for a pair. Kammer and Vesperman singled in runs to leave the Eagles ahead 9-3.
- A left field single put the Scots back on the board in the fifth, but Edgewood University poured it on.
Charlie Tompach kept the fireworks flying with a solo home run, while Prindle added on another two-run homer for a 12-4 lead. The Eagles kept their foot on the gas in the sixth, a Tompach single to center field and a
Carter Kelley double to left center adding in a pair.
- While Alma would fend off the run-rule and add on a run with a single to center in the seventh,
Jacob Carney sealed the deal with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to secure an impressive victory.
- Kammer and Kelly formed an impressive batting duo. Kammer hit 5-for-5 with two RBIs and a double. Kelly hit 4-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and a triple.
-
Hayden Hellenbrand accounted for three runs and hit a double.
- Tompach had a stellar day. He hit 2-for-3 with two walks, a home run, four runs, and two RBIs.
- Prindle shined. He posted two home runs, two walks, three runs, and four RBIs.
-
Aiden Shumaker settled in for five innings of work in the victory, striking out four.
Cole Pulliam shut down the Scots in relief, allowing one run in three innings and fanning a pair.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Prindle's two home runs matched the program single-game record.
- Prindle broke the Edgewood University record for walks in his career, reaching 121 with his two on the day. He surpassed former teammate Joseph Kalafut and his 120 walks.
- The 22 hits as a team were their most since the 2024 season (Wisconsin Lutheran, March 27, 2024).
- Tompach's home run was his first as an Eagle.
