GLENDALE, Wis. – Baseball entered the second day of the NACC Tournament looking to keep their momentum rolling. They faced off with the third-seeded Concordia Chicago Cougars and the second seed, the Aurora Spartans. After a complete game one-run showing from
Aiden Shumaker anchored a 4-1 victory over the Cougars (26-15), the Eagles (22-20) took down the Spartans (22-19) in a 10-9 slugfest.
GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 4, CONCORDIA CHICAGO 1
- A pair of runs crossed home for the Eagles in the second inning.
Dominic Lee recorded an RBI groundout, while
Colby Davis singled in a run down the right field line.
- Edgewood College took full advantage of Cougar mistakes in the eighth. After tallying one off an error, a Davis single up the middle tacked on another.
- Concordia Chicago put together one last effort in the ninth. After bringing home a leadoff triple and with the tying run at bat,
Brevin Brisack cut down a runner at home for the first out. A double play ended the threat and game.
- Shumaker pitched a complete game, striking out four with only free passes given in nine innings.
- Davis recorded two RBIs in the victory.
GAME TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 10, AURORA 9
- While the Spartans kicked things off with a two-run first, a
Daniel Bentivegna RBI single to center field helped the Eagles keep pace, down 3-1 after two.
- A
Hayden Hellenbrand double to left followed by an error from Aurora evened things 3-3 after three.
Aidan Williams and Hogan settled in as neither team would allow another run until the seventh.
- Edgewood College struck first in the seventh. Hellenbrand restarted the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field, while
Jacob Carney singled in another. A Brisack single to left tallied another for a three-run seventh. A double and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh had Aurora hot on the Eagles' heels, trailing by a run.
- Looking for breathing room, Edgewood College put together a four-run ninth. Bentivegna continued to roll with an RBI single to center field. Lee bunted in another run, before
Terry Tolliver Jr. sent a two-RBI single to right center to establish a 10-5 edge.
- The Spartans made the most of their last gasp. After loading the bases, a two-RBI double down the right field line and a single to right center pushed the top seed within a run of the Eagles. An unassisted groundout to the shortstop would cut down the rally as Edgewood College finished a 2-0 day.
- Bentivegna hit 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
Kyle Prindle earned a pair of runs.
- Five Eagles recorded multi-hit affairs.
