VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College softball team defeated the Aurora University Spartans for the first time in program history on Friday. The Eagles and Spartans met for a NACC doubleheader, with Aurora taking game one, 7-2. Edgewood College rallied back in game-two behind two home runs, phenomenal defense, and a complete game in the circle to win 5-4.
EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 5, AURORA UNIVERSITY 4 – GAME TWO
- Edgewood College (10-20, 5-9 NACC) put together an outstanding game on all fronts in game two on Friday. Two home runs, countless web gem defensive plays, and a complete game in the circle led the Eagles to the victory.
- Aurora University (18-12, 8-6 NACC) scored first in the nightcap. The Eagles responded in the bottom of the third frame, as an RBI single off the bat of Grace Ott tied the game at one apiece.
- The Eagles played lock-down defense in the fourth inning, with a diving catch from Ott at first base to earn the first out. In the net at-bat, Lily Mabs snagged a hard-hit ball at third base to keep the Spartans off the base-paths.
- Edgewood College broke through for the lead in the bottom of the fifth frame. A three-run home run to center field from Ott giving the Eagles a 4-1 advantage.
- Mabs recorded her second home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Eagles some breathing room. Following two runs from the Spartans in the top of the frame.
- Lauren Prigge anchored the Eagles in the circle, pitching her fifth complete game of the season and striking out three batters. With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, Prigge earned the strikeout to close out the victory for the Eagles.
- Ott went 2-for-3 at the plate in game two, driving in four batters and scoring a run. Mabs added a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI and run. Natalie Fields scored twice for the Eagles, while Bean Dubree added a double on the afternoon.
AURORA UNIVERSITY 7, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 2 – GAME ONE
- The Spartan bats controlled game one on Friday, recording 12 hits and three home runs.
- Aurora opened the scoring with a solo-home run to center field in the second frame. Home runs in the third and fourth gave the Spartans a 5-0 advantage through four complete frames.
- Down 7-0, the Eagles fought back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth frame. Back-to-back doubles from Kya Loffswold and Olivia Hebert resulted in a run for the Eagles. The Eagles second run coming on a stolen base from Kya Loffswold.
- Fields went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Eagles in game one. Loffswold, Hebert and Dubree each recorded a double.
- Nikki Fahey earned the start in the circle for the Eagles, going four innings and striking out three batters. Tatum Duff pitched three innings of relief for the Eagles.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College's game two victory snaped a 41-game losing streak against the Spartans. The Eagles and Spartans first met in 2004; the Eagles win on Friday afternoon is their first-ever against Aurora.
