CHICAGO, ILL. – Baseball flew south Saturday to kick off NACC action for the 2025 season. They faced off against the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks in a doubleheader. After the Scarlet Hawks (5-8, 1-1 NACC) took game one 10-6, the Eagles (5-8, 1-1) struck back with a 12-2 (7 inning) victory in the second outing.
GAME ONE: ILLINOIS TECH 10, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 6
- A two-run shot to right field in the first kicked off the scoring for the Scarlet Hawks. The Eagles would even the game in the third inning, with a
Terry Tolliver Jr. double and a
Jacob Carney single each tallying a run for a 2-2 tie.
- After a single to right field in the fourth gave Illinois Tech a 1-0 edge, Edgewood College did some damage in the fifth. Tolliver Jr. singled to right field to record a run, while
Kyle Prindle added another with a bases-loaded single. A walk would add on another run with the bases loaded and one out, but a double play cut the rally short for the Eagles. A double down the right field line in the bottom of the fifth for Illinois Tech left things at 5-4 Edgewood College.
-
Hayden Hellenbrand singled to left field to plate a run in the sixth for the Eagles, but the Scarlet Hawk offense took over the game. A sacrifice fly in the seventh cut the Edgewood College edge to one. The Eagles failed to take advantage of runners on second and third with one out in the top of the eighth, before Illinois Tech put together a five-run eighth.
- After evening the game with an error with the bases loaded, the Scarlet Hawks hit a three-run triple to take a 9-6 lead. A RBI double to left center would wrap up the scoring for the hosts. A pair of singles would get runners on first and second with an out in the top of the ninth for Edgewood College, but a pair of strikeouts would end the threat.
- Tolliver Jr. hit 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of doubles.
-
Drew Lenz pitched seven innings, allowing four runs and striking out seven.
- Hellenbrand hit 3-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases.
- Prindle and
Brevin Brisack each had a pair of hits.
- Gutsfield hit 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two doubles, and a home run for the hosts.
- Gori earned the save, striking out two. Schnurr claimed the victory.
GAME TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 12, ILLINOIS TECH 2 (7 INNINGS)
- A nine-run third from the Eagles broke the game wide open. After loading the bases, a Carney single to left field scored a pair. Brisack and
Ryan Ambrosy followed up with a two-RBI single to the outfield each as Edgewood College poured it on. A balk would plate a run, before Tolliver Jr. doubled in another run. An error sent home a runner to cap off the inning.
- The Eagles pushed the game into run-rule territory in the sixth and seventh inning. Brisack singled to right field to score one in the sixth.
Mac Vesperman kicked off the scoring in the seventh with an RBI single to right field. Another Scarlet Hawk error would add on another run. A two-RBI double to left center from Illinois Tech in the bottom of the seventh would not be enough to fend off the Edgewood College victory.
-
Aiden Shumaker shined in the victory. He pitched all seven innings and struck out 10 batters. He allowed only two runs and walked no batters.
- Carney and Brisack each earned three RBIs. Carney also posted a pair of walks, as did Tolliver Jr. and
Dominic Lee.
-
Carson Richter hit 2-for-4.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Shumaker's 10 strikeouts in the second game were a personal best. It was also the most strikeouts by a single Eagle pitcher in a game since the 2023 season.
- The six stolen bases in game two were the most from Edgewood College in a game in 2025.
