Eagles return to action with pair of victories

MADISON – Returning to action for the first time since claiming the NACC regular season crown, Women's Tennis battled with a pair of nonconference foes Saturday. They took on the Crown Polars and Dubuque Spartans at the Powless Tennis Center. The Eagles (13-1) continued their strong season with a 7-0 sweep of the Polars (0-1) before taking down the Spartans (7-7) in a 6-1 final.
 
MATCH ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 7, CROWN 0
- The Eagles set the tone for the match with Evelyn Taylor and Marissa Light claiming a 6-0 victory in top doubles to clinch the doubles point. Madelyn Connaughty and Hattie Plenty won by default in third doubles.
 
- Christina Ekkela and Sarah Emory earned a victory in a 7-6 (8-6) thriller in second billing
 
- Taylor continued to roll into singles. She recorded a 6-0, 6-0 final in no. 1 singles. Her doubles partner Light claimed a 6-1, 6-0 result in the second slot.
 
- Plenty shined in third billing with a 6-2, 6-0 final. Connaughty won 6-0, 6-1 in no. 4 singles.
 
- Ekkela blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in fifth billing, while Emory won by default in the sixth slot.
   
MATCH TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 6, DUBUQUE 1
- The Eagles put together a clean sweep in doubles. Connaughty and Plenty earned a 6-0 final in the second slot, while Ekkela and Emory claimed the doubles point with a 6-1 final in the third slot.
 
- Light and Taylor continued to shine with a 7-5 final in no. 1 doubles
 
- Taylor kept momentum going into singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in top billing. Light followed it up with a 6-3, 7-5 final in no. 2 singles.
 
- Plenty and Ekkela won by identical 6-1, 6-2 margins in third and fifth singles respectively.
 
- Connaughty earned a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2) victory in a thriller in the fourth slot.
 
- Emory's comeback in sixth singles fell just short in a 7-5, 0-6, 1-0 (11-9) defeat.
   
UP NEXT
Edgewood College will continue to tune up for the NACC Tournament on Friday, February 14. They'll travel to Winona, Minn. to take on Saint Mary's. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
