Sabres shut down Eagles in second half

MADISON, Wis. – Men's Basketball hosted their first home NACC game at the Todd Wehr Edgedome Saturday. They took on the Marian Sabres as both teams sought out their first conference victory. The Sabres (3-3, 1-1 NACC) locked down the Eagles (0-6, 0-2) in the second half for a 73-64 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Edgewood University led 5-4 at 17:57, Marian went on a 13-2 sprint over the next 4:10 to build up a 17-7 advantage. Five unanswered would help the Eagles keep pace as the squads headed into the second 10 minutes.

- The Sabres would build up back to a 29-19 gap at 7:25, but a 12-4 response from the Eagles cut the edge to 33-31 at 3:46. A last-second bucket from Avery Houden would have Edgewood University hot on Marian's heels heading into the locker room down 37-35.

- Both teams landed jabs to kick off the second half, but the Eagles pushed into the lead at 17:04 with a three-point play from Logan Steffensmeier for a 45-42 edge. 10 in a row propelled the Sabres back ahead 52-45 at 11:25. Once again Edgewood University surged ahead, a 12-4 answer giving them a 57-56 edge at 8:55.

- The Eagles offense would be grounded by the Marian defense, which held them to seven points for the remaining 8:55. The Sabres ground out a 73-64 victory, finishing the game on a 9-1 rally.

- Marian's defense clamped down on the Edgewood University shooters in the second half as they shot 9-of-29 (31.03 percent) from the field.

- Andrew Ayeni led all scorers with 24 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds and posted four assists.

- Marvin Haslett earned 13 points. Alex Vassilakis tallied nine points and nine rebounds.
