WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – The Edgewood University women's basketball team fell to Lawrence University to open the JustAGame Division III Invitational. The Eagles couldn't keep up with the Vikings in the non-conference contest, falling 72-49 on Friday afternoon. Ella Hamacher led the Eagles with a career-best scoring effort in the neutral site bout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lawrence University (9-1) jumped out to a 14-7 lead through the first 10 minutes on Friday. The Vikings scored the first eight points in the opening five minutes. Edgewood University (5-5) didn't get on the scoreboard until the fifth minute, as Hamacher scored a layup in the paint. The Vikings shot 40 percent (6-for-15) from the floor in the opening quarter.
- Both the Eagles and Vikings turned on the jets in the second quarter. Edgewood University shot a game-best 43.75 percent (7-for-16) from the floor in the second quarter and scored 15 points. Unfortunately, the Eagles effort wasn't enough to combat 27 points from Lawrence. The Vikings took a 41-22 lead into halftime.
- The Eagles posted a pair of three-point makes out of the break to reduce the Vikings lead to just 15 points. Laci Lindsey netted a three-pointer with 8:44 left on the clock. Taylor Wollin followed that up with a three-point make of her own with 7:23 remaining. Hamacher and Kate Gunderson joined the three-pointer party in the final minutes to help the Eagles outscore the Vikings 19-16 in the third quarter. Lawrence led 57-41 going into the final quarter.
- It was a defensive battle in the final 10 minutes on Friday, as both teams shot their worst from the floor. Lawrence held on for the non-conference victory behind 15 points. The Vikings defense held the Eagles to just eight points through the final 10 minutes.
- Edgewood University out rebounded Lawrence 41 to 39 on Friday afternoon.
- Turnovers doomed the Eagles, as they posted 21 in the non-conference contest.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Hamacher posted a career-best 21 points for the Eagles. The freshman went 8-for-17 from the floor and 2-for-4 from beyond the arc.
- Wollin pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Eagles.
- Kate Gunderson did a bit of everything, scoring nine points, pulling down five rebounds, and dishing out three assists.
THE OPPOSITION
- Three Lawrence players finished in double-digit scoring on Friday. Kate Adams led the Vikings with 17 points, going 5-for-10 from beyond the arc. Sophie Morey (15 points) and Charlotte Brennan (13 points) also scored in double-digits.
- Brennan, Olivia Kesti, and Maggie Jarzemsky all pulled down five rebounds for Lawrence.
