MADISON – The Edgewood College Eagles women's volleyball team opened the Todd Wehr Edgedome for the 2024 season Tuesday night. They hosted the UW-Platteville Pioneers, receiving votes in the latest AVCA national poll. The Eagles (1-2) struggled with the Pioneers (4-0) attack as Edgewood College lost 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 28-26).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Five straight points with the help of four kills put UW-Platteville in a 9-3 position early. Their offense was relentless as they posted 17 kills and a .469 hitting percentage on route to a 1-0 match lead.
- While four straight kills early put the Pioneers up 5-1, the Eagles would claw their way back into the second set. A 9-4 rally featuring two aces, two blocks, and three kills would tie up the set 17-17. The Pioneers would slam the door shut on the set after the two squads sat tied at 19 apiece, rattling off six points in a row with a pair of blocks and three kills to take a 2-0 match lead.
- A sluggish start from the Pioneers coupled with a strong showing from Edgewood College would put the hosts in the driver's seat for the early portion of the third set. The Eagles would hold a 13-8 advantage, but UW-Platteville grabbed momentum back with a 14-4 burst and a 22-17 advantage. Edgewood College flipped the script with six straight points, including a pair of aces from
Mia Hinkamper and two blocks, for a 23-22 edge. The two squads would tussle over the slim margin into extra points, where the Pioneers would seal the set and match with three points in a row.
- Three from UW-Platteville finished with double-digit kills. Kierney McDonald hit a match-high 18 kills and a .333 hitting percentage, while Emma Carlson posted a 11-kill, 17-dig double-double.
- Gracie Gibbons played a key role in the Pioneers' attack with 38 assists.
