VERONA, Wis. – August 30 was the last time the Edgewood College men's soccer team lost a contest. Since then, the Eagles have won eight games and currently own seven-straight victories. On Saturday, the Eagles continued to make their mark on Division III soccer, taking down UW-Whitewater 4-1, their first win over the Warhawks in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The high powered offense of Edgewood College (8-1-1) didn't take long to score on homecoming Saturday, as Miguel Konde Gwo found the back of the net in the ninth minute, assisted by Brandon Kaup.
- Connor Gage continued to prove his offensive dominance, scoring in the 27th minute to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
- UW-Whitewater (5-4-2) put the pressure on the Eagles in the 39th minute, as Aidian Martin scored to put the Warhawks on the board.
- Edgewood College blew the contest open in the 65th minute, as Gage scored his second goal of the contest.
- Kaup got in on the scoring in the 81st minute, assisted by Gage.
- It was a fast-paced offensive contest, as both teams combined for 38 shots, led marginally by UW-Whitewater with 20. Both teams put seven shots on goal on Saturday evening.
- Maverick Van Laanen was instrumental in goal for the Eagles, making six saves.
- Matthew Vollmer recorded three saves in net for UW-Whitewater.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- History was made for Edgewood College on Saturday night, as the Eagles earned their first win in program history over UW-Whitewater. The Warhawks have won the past 15 meetings, dating back to 1991.
- The Eagles are just the second team in program history to open their season with a record of 8-1-1 or better. In 2000, the Eagles went 8-1-0, 6-0-0 LMC to open their season.
- Edgewood College now owns seven-straight wins, which is tied with three other seasons for the most consecutive wins in program history. In 2005, 1999 and 1996, the Eagles won seven-straight contests to win the LMC Tournament Championship.
- Gage ranks third in points (38) recorded in a single season and is tied with Jeff Ornes for goals scored (15) in a single season.
- 48 goals are tied for fourth by an Eagle team in a single season, while 127 points is eight-best in single season history.
