RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Powered by three home runs and strong pitching, the Edgewood College softball team earned their first NACC sweep on Saturday. The Eagles went on the road to Concordia Chicago and took two from the Cougars in an 8-6 game one win followed by a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.
EAGLES 8, COUGARS 6 (GAME ONE)
- Tatum Duff was stellar in the circle for Edgewood College (11-9, 2-2 NACC) striking out a season-best seven batters. The junior allowed just seven hits through six innings of work. Elizabeth Malarski came on in relief, pitching the final inning and allowing three hits.
- The Edgewood College bats got going early scoring two runs in the first inning and tallying another run in the second for a 3-0 lead. Natalie Fields scored the Eagles first run, while Olivia Hebert came around to score on a Grace Ott double one at-bat later. Jenna Sanchez scored the Eagles third run of the game via a home run in the second frame.
- Concordia Chicago (5-13, 1-5 NACC) plated four runs in the bottom of the third frame to take a 4-3 lead. The Eagles responded in the fifth inning, scoring three runs, and taking a 6-4 lead.
- Ott scored two more runs in the top of the seventh inning via a home run to solidify an 8-4 lead for the Eagles.
- Concordia Chicago scored twice in the seventh frame, but it wasn't enough to cut down the Eagles victory.
- Ott led the way at the plate with three hits and four RBI. Fields and Hebert both collected two hits.
- The Edgewood College defense recorded two three-up-three-down innings and turned one double play.
EAGLES 5, COUGARS 3 (GAME TWO)
- The Edgewood College bats continued to rake in the second contest, as they recorded 11 hits in the nightcap victory. Edgewood College jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the second inning. Ott belted her second home run of the day, to score the Eagles first run. Camden Shepherd plated Gracie Halfman for the Eagles second run, while pinch runner Aryiah Schuh scored on a Fields single.
- The Eagles scored their final two runs of the afternoon in the third frame, a Lily Mabs single plating Halfman and Hebert. The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the second inning. The score would remain 5-2 through the fourth and fifth innings.
- The Cougars plated a run in the bottom of the sixth frame, but it wasn't enough to cut down the Eagles lead.
- The duo of Grace Pustina and Grace Baugnet combined for the victory on the mound in the nightcap. Pustina earned the start, pitching three innings and striking out two batters. Baugnet recorded four innings of work in the circle, striking out two batters and only allowing four hits and one run.
- Fields, Halfman, and Mabs each recorded two hits in the victory. Mabs posted the best performance of her career, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
