VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College softball team hosted Marian University in a NACC doubleheader on Sunday. They battled with the Sabres, a game one come back falling just short in a 10-9 final. The Eagles responded to earn a 11-3 run-rule victory in game two.
EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 11, MARIAN 3 – 6 INNINGS (GAME TWO)
- A five run sixth inning lifted Edgewood College (17-15, 8-8 NACC) to a run-rule victory in the nightcap on Sunday. Going into the sixth frame, the Eagles led Marian (14-12, 8-6 NACC) 6-3. Alyse Maurer stepped up to the plate and opened the bottom of the frame with a home run to right center field. Kya Loffswold stepped up to the plate in a pinch hitter situation. With the bases loaded, Loffswold recorded an RBI double to give the Eagles an 8-3 lead. The Eagles ninth run came across via a bases loaded walk, and a single off the bat of Gracie Halfman scored two runners to give Edgewood College the run-rule victory.
- The Eagles offense was consistent in game two, scoring two runs in the second, third and fifth innings. Grace Ott was a highlight in the fifth frame, scoring two runs on a home run to left center field.
- Halfman went 3-for-4 in the nightcap, scoring a run and three RBI. Natalie Fields, Ott, and Camden Shepherd each collected two hits. Ott added a home run and four RBI.
- Grace Pustina earned the complete game victory in the circle. She struck out two batters and scattered just five hits.
MARIAN 10, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 9 (GAME ONE)
- With just three outs to work with, Edgewood College trailed Marian 10-3. Six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning fueled an impressive comeback, but the Eagles fell just one run short. Halfman got things going with a single through the right side to score Elizabeth Malarski for the first run of the inning. Maurer was patient at the plate, drawing the walk to score Hebert from third. Sanchez scored two Eagles on a double to right field and Camden Shepherd plated Sanchez on sacrifice fly to make the score 10-9.
- Marian put up a four spot in the second inning to open scoring and take a 4-0 lead. The Sabres added four runs in the third inning that featured a home run from Katelyn Matenaer. The Edgewood College bats responded in both instances, scoring twice in the second inning and once in the third inning. Through four innings Marian led 9-3.
- Halfman was impressive at the plate for Edgewood College. She went 4-for-4, scoring two runs, plating two Eagles and notching two doubles.
- Grace Baugnet earned the start in the circle for the Eagles, going 1.2 innings and recording a strikeout. Nikki Fahey pitched in relief, striking out a batter and scattering six hits.
- Matenaer recorded three of Marian's 13 hits in the opener. She recorded two home runs, scored three times, and knocked four RBI.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Eagles have earned their four NACC split of the season. In every instance, the Eagles have earned crucial splits with top teams in the conference, which included Lakeland, Concordia Wisconsin and MSOE.
