Game Recap: Baseball |

Strong pitching in game one helps Eagles split with Sabres

FOND DU LAC, WIS. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad wrapped up a busy week Sunday on the road. They faced the Marian Sabres in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) doubleheader. The Eagles (14-11, 8-4 NACC) held the Sabres (14-11, 8-4) offense in check game one in a 7-2 victory, but the Sabres got rolling with a 18-4 (7 innings) victory in game two.

GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 7, MARIAN 2
- Both teams plated runs in the first. A Brooks Kalscheur single to center field kicked off the scoring, while the Sabres doubled to left field to even things at 1-1. Kyle Sagan singled through the left side for a 2-1 lead after two.

- Sagan continued his strong game one in the top of the fourth with a single to left field tallying a run. Kalscheur popped up to first base to plate another for a 4-1 lead after four.

- A sacrifice fly to center field tallied one in the sixth for the hosts, but the Eagles put things out of reach in the seventh. Terry Tolliver Jr. plated one with a single to right field. Dylan Carrington added on one with a double to right, before Ryan Ambrosy put a bow on game one with a single through the right side for a 7-2 final tally.

- Ryan Mixey tossed a complete game. He fanned three Sabres and allowed only two hits in seven innings with one earned run.

- Sagan hit 4-for-4 with two RBIs, a double, and a triple.

- Kalscheur and Tolliver each had a pair of hits.

GAME TWO: MARIAN 18, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 4 (7 INNINGS)
- The Sabres leaped out to a 9-0 lead after the first two innings. A single through the left side, a single to right field, a throwing error by the catcher, a two-RBI double, and a single through the right side left things at 6-0 after one.

- Marian added on three with a double down the right field line followed by a two-RBI single to single field, but the Eagles cut into the lead in the top of the third. Tolliver singled to right center to put Edgewood College on the board, before a pair of defensive miscues by Marian helped trim the lead to 9-3.

- The Sabres continued to roll while the Eagles offense went cold. Five runs, three unearned, left things at 14-3 for Marian after three, before a single up the middle and a double down the right field line each plated two runs for a 18-3 lead.

- Ryan Harris would wrap up the day with a sacrifice fly to right field scoring one.

- Harris and Tolliver each recorded an RBI in the loss.

- Jacob Krenn and Hayden Hellenbrand each pitched an inning in relief and allowed no base runners.

- Patrick Flynn earned the victory, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing only two earned runs.

- Four different Sabres tallied three hits in their victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The triple in game one moved the 2024 team into a tie for second on the single-season record books for triples. The mark was previously reached by the 2021 squad.

- Marian owns a 44-35 lead in the all-time series.
