Eagles win two to round out Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Edgewood College softball team returned to the diamonds at Hancock Park for the final two games of their Florida trip. The Eagles opened the day with an 8-7 win over UMass Dartmouth before routing Saint Mary's College, 8-4, in the nightcap.

Edgewood College (9-7) scored first on Thursday morning, as an RBI single from Jenna Sanchez plated the first run of the day for a 1-0 lead.

- UMass Dartmouth (3-6) kept pace with the Eagles, scoring one run each in the second, third, fourth and fifth frames. Edgewood College posted a two run third inning and another run in the top of the fourth frame.

- With the score tied at four a piece going into the sixth inning, both teams knew a strong offensive frame would be key. Edgewood College scored three runs, first on a two RBI single from Olivia Hebert. Grace Ott would score Natalie Fields in the next at-bat to take a 7-4 lead. Dartmouth matched the Eagles, scoring three runs in the bottom of the frame.

- Edgewood College scored the winning run in the top of the seventh frame, a double from Elizabeth Malarski plated Camden Shepherd for the Eagles eighth and winning run. The Eagles defended against Dartmouth in the bottom of the frame to take home the win.

- Shepherd and Malarski both recorded two hits each, as Malarski added a double. Ott led the way with three RBI.

- Malarski added the win for Edgewood College in 1.2 innings pitched. Tatum Duff started the game, striking out two batters in 5.1 innings of work.

EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 8, SAINT MARY'S COLLEGE 4

Edgewood College held a 3-0 lead through the first two innings. The Eagles would score five runs between the third and fourth frames for an 8-2 advantage through four innings.

- Hebert scored three times for the Eagles in the nightcap, while Halfman came across to score twice. Three of the Eagles runs came as a result of doubles off the bat of Sanchez in the first and third innings.

- Saint Mary's College (0-8) posted two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to take down the Eagles.

- Sanchez drove in four runs for Edgewood College in the win with Ott and Halfman each plating in two Eagles. Hebert, Ott, Halfman, and Sanchez each had two hits. Hebert and Sanchez added two doubles, while Ott doubled once.

- Grace Baugnet earned her third win as an Eagle, and third win of the spring break trip. The freshman went five innings on the mound, striking out one batter and allowing just two earned runs. Nikki Fahey put in two innings of work in relief, striking out a batter and only allowing two hits.

The win moves the Eagles to 9-7 on the season. Edgewood College finished their Florida trip with a confident 7-3 record, which included two run-rule wins.

Edgewood College will return home and begin conference play on Saturday, March 23. Doubleheader action at Alverno College is set for 12:00 p.m. from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
