Game Recap: Baseball |

Eagles split with Scots, Polars in Arizona

TUCSON, ARIZ. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad entered the second half of the Tucson Invitational Games Thursday. They faced off with the Macalester Scots before battling in a rematch against the Crown Polars. The Eagles (5-5) struggled with the Scots (3-8) and their bats in a 19-9 loss, before taking down the Polars (2-7) 9-5.

GAME ONE: MACALESTER 19, EDGEWOOD COLLGE 9 (7 INNINGS)
- The Scots struck hard early, tallying seven runs in the bottom of the first before an out was recorded. After a fielder's choice to the shortstop kicked off the scoring, three singles in a row added four more runs for a 5-0 lead. An RBI double coupled with an error would add on two more, while another error would make it 8-0. A single to center field, a double to left field, and a single to first base would leave things 11-0 after one.

- An error by the second baseman put the Eagles on the board in the second, while Lennard Pureza hit a fielder's choice to shortstop in the third to add on another.

- Macalester added on five more runs in the third to leave the total at 16-2 Scots after three.

- The next three innings would see Edgewood College chipping away at the Macalester advantage. A error by the shortstop scored one to start the fourth, while a Connor Goodwin triple down the right field line added on a pair. The Eagles would add on another before the inning was over, then Brooks Kalscheur doubled down the left field line for an RBI in the fifth. Brevin Brisack added on a ground-rule double to leave things at 16-8 after five and a half.

- A RBI single to left center in the sixth followed by Goodwin hitting an RBI single to left center in the top of the seventh would leave things 17-9 Macalester. The Scots would put away the game with the run rule in the bottom of the frame. A single to left field tallied one before a double to center field added another to solidify a 19-9 final.

- Eight different Eagles recorded hits in the defeat.

GAME TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 9, CROWN 5
- Neither lineup managed much in the first two innings, but a single to short in the third put the Polars on the board first. They threatened more with the bases loaded and one out, but a strike out and a line out to shortstop ended the threat.

- Crown mistakes would help the Eagles' along in the fourth. After an error by second base scored an unearned run, a wild pitch tacked on another. A Ryan Ambrosy single to the shortstop put things at 3-1 Edgewood College after four.

-  After Godwin led off the fifth with a triple, a pair of walks would load the bases for the Eagles. Brevin Brisack scored one with a single to left field to start things off, before a Terry Tolliver Jr. single to center field batted in a pair. Kalscheur hit a sacrifice fly to right field to solidify the Edgewood College advantage at 7-1 after five.

- The Polars threatened to rally in the eighth. They would load the bases after a single to left field tallied a run. After a bases loaded walk and a single through the right side each scored one, Crown had bases loaded with one out down 7-4. A fielder's choice to second base would send home one, but another out would end the inning.

- Tolliver continued his strong Spring Break in the ninth, sending a home run over the right field fence for two insurance runs. Goodwin would clamp down on the Polars lineup in the ninth, striking out a pair in a 1-2-3 inning to earn the save and clinch the victory.
