Eagles down Washington College, fall to Chicago

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Edgewood College softball team faced Washington College and the University of Chicago at The Spring Games on Tuesday. The Eagles opened the day with a thrilling 9-0 shutout of Washington College. In the nightcap, the Edgewood College bats struggled, combined with costly fielding errors that haunted the Eagles in a six-inning final.

EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 9, WASHINGTON COLLEGE 0 (5 INNINGS)
- There's nothing better than scoring first, and that's just what Edgewood College (7-7) did on Tuesday against Washington College (3-7-1). The Eagles strung together a solid first inning at the plate, drawing three walks and taking advantage of timely hitting to score three runs. Gracie Halfman drove in Carlie Odejewski from third on a sacrifice fly to right field for the first run of the day. Jenna Sanchez roped a two RBI single to left field, scoring Grace Ott and Olivia Hebert.

- Edgewood College wouldn't strike again until posting a whopping six runs in the fifth inning. Hebert opened the top of the fifth frame drawing her second walk of the day. With runners on first and second, Halfman plated Hebert via a single through the right side of the infield to give Edgewood College a 4-0 lead. Maurer followed that up with another single to score pinch runner Aryiah Schuh. Sanchez continued the Eagles consistent hitting, scoring pinch runner Lauren Hillman and Halfman for a 7-0 advantage. A sacrifice fly from Mackenzie Miller plated Sanchez for the eighth run, while Lily Mabs scored on a wild pitch and Washington College throwing error for ninth and final run.

- The Eagles defense was solid behind winning pitcher Grace Baugnet, making no errors.

- Sanchez went 2-for-3 on the day, recording one run and four RBI. Halfman posted a hit, scored a run, and recorded two RBI.

- Five Eagles recorded a hit on the day, as Edgewood College totaled seven hits.

- Baugnet recorded her second win as an Eagle, and first complete game shutout. Baugnet only allowed four hits and walked just one batter in five innings pitched.

UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO 13, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 2 (6 INNINGS)
- The University of Chicago (7-3) scored first, plating a run in the top of the first frame. The 1-0 lead would stand as the Florida sunset turned to night and the fifth inning arrived. The Maroons posted four runs in the top of the fifth frame to take a 5-0 lead. Just an inning later, Chicago would strike again, scoring eight runs for a 13-0 advantage.

- Just three of Chicago's 13 runs would come across as earned on the evening, as Edgewood College recorded five errors on defense.

- Edgewood College finally got on the board in the sixth inning. Hebert sent a double into the night sky and over the head of the left fielder to score Odejewski. Natalie Fields would come around to score on a Halfman ground out later in the inning.

- Hebert recorded two hits and an RBI for Edgewood College in the nightcap.

- Chicago posted 13 hits on the evening, including two from three different players. Ally Gore and Natalie Antin led the way for Chicago both going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

- Paige Heffke earned the win, throwing five innings and striking out six batters. Tatum Duff went 5.2 innings on the mound for Edgewood College.
