Eagles fall in hard-fought battle with Saints

ORLANDO, FLA. – The women's tennis squad kicked off their Spring Break trip Sunday with a nonconference battle. They faced off with the College of St. Scholastica Saints. In a match that saw several tiebreaks and comebacks, the Saints (7-5) prevailed 7-2 over the Eagles (10-4).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After St. Scholastica took top doubles billing over Cecile Fuchs and Evelyn Taylor 8-2, the second and third doubles tilts proved to be intense affairs. Jewel Lindwall and Maddy Coopmans were up 5-2 in second doubles, but the pair of Chole Hasbargan and Mishell Benitez roared back, claiming an 8-7 (7-2) win.
 
- Ellie Murphy and Madelyn Connaughty also had control early in third doubles, but Maya Nibbe and Anna Ritchie rallied for an 8-6 final and a 3-0 doubles sweep for the Saints.
 
- Taylor found herself locked in a dramatic affair in no. 3 singles. After winning 7-6 (10-8), Katia Bartels bounced back to deal her a 6-2 loss in the second set. Taylor locked in, winning the tiebreaker 1-0 (10-7).
 
- Murphy excelled in fourth billing with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 victory.
 
- Fuchs fell in no. 1 singles 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Lindwall was competitive in the second slot, losing 6-1, 7-5.
 
- Christina Ekkela hung tough in fifth singles, dropping a 6-4, 7-5 final. Cassie Henderson rounded out the evening with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- St. Scholastica is undefeated against Edgewood College in women's tennis with a 3-0 record.
 
UP NEXT
The Eagles look to rally tomorrow afternoon with more action down in Florida. They will face off with the Roger Williams Hawks with first serve scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EST. The two programs had their only previous meeting back in 2009.
