Eagles open spring schedule with sweep of Spartans for fifth straight victory

MADISON – The Edgewood College Eagles women's tennis squad kicked off the 2024 portion of their schedule Saturday afternoon. They faced the Dubuque Spartans at Powless Tennis Center in non-conference action. The Eagles (9-3) won their fifth straight, taking down the Spartans (1-11) 9-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cecile Fuchs and Evelyn Taylor set the tone for the match early, taking an 8-0 victory as the top doubles pair. Christina Ekkela and Cassie Henderson added an 8-0 final of their own in third doubles, while Ellie Murphy and Madelyn Connaughty wrapped up the doubles slate with an 8-5 win in second billing.
 
- Fuchs and Jewel Lindwall clinched the match for Edgewood College in first and second singles respectively. Fuchs claimed a 6-1, 6-0 final, while Lindwall earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory of her own.
 
- The Eagles recorded four 6-0, 6-0 wins to wrap up the afternoon. Taylor started things off in third billing, while Murphy added another clean sweep as the no. 4. Ekkela in fifth and Henderson in sixth finished the day the way they started with flawless tallies.
   
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College is 4-0 against Dubuque in women's tennis, the 9-0 victory their first clean bill against the Spartans in program history.
 
- The victory was the Eagles' fifth straight dating back to the end of their fall schedule. They have won all five in 9-0 fashion.
 
UP NEXT
Edgewood College will have one last outings in the confines of the Powless Tennis Center before heading out for their Spring Trip. They will take on the Northwestern (MN) Eagles Saturday, February 17 with first serve scheduled for noon. Northwestern holds a 2-1 lead in the all-time series, though Edgewood College won their last meeting.
