JACKSON, MISS. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad kicked off their 2024 campaign down south Friday afternoon. They battled with the Millsaps Majors in the first of a three-game series. The Majors (3-1) protected their home turf in what turned into a pitcher's duel, defeating the Eagles (0-1) 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Each team did most of their damage in the first inning. Edgewood College struck first.
Kyle Prindle took advantage of a leadoff triple to center from
Xavier Schreiber with a double into right center to start the scoring. After Prindle stole third,
Kyle Sagan sent his teammate in with a single through the left side for a 2-0 edge.
- Millsaps took advantage of Eagles miscues in the bottom of the first. An error put a runner in scoring position, before an error by the shortshop allowed a runner to reach safely while sending in a run from third. A ground out to shortstop sent in an unearned run to leave things tied at 2-2.
- Both pitchers settled in for the long haul after an action-packed first inning. The Majors left a runner stranded on third with one out in the second, but neither team would threaten much until the eighth inning.
- Small ball was the story of the day as Millsaps turned a pair of singles into runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the eighth. A sacrifice fly would bring in what turned out to be the winning run. Edgewood College would limit the damage defensively but were unable to come up with runs in the top of the ninth as they fell in their season opener.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Schreiber shined in his first game as an Eagle. He hit 2-of-4 with a double and a triple while accounting for a run.
-
Ryan Mixey had a strong outing on the mound. He fanned four runners in five innings, allowing only one earned run.
- Sagan and Prindle each battled in a run.
THE OPPOSITION
- Wil Wood proved to be a force. He fanned 14 Edgewood College batters in six innings pitched.
- Jackson Ware consistently got on base for the Majors, hitting 3-of-4.
- EJ Ousley tallied a 2-of-4 day at the plate with a run.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
-

- Millsaps holds a 3-1 series lead against Edgewood College.
