Tigers fend off Eagles comeback in D3Hoops.com Classic finale

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – The Edgewood College Eagles men's basketball squad wrapped up competition at the D3Hoops.com Classic Sunday evening. They faced off with the Wittenberg Tigers. A late Eagles (2-10) rally fell just short in a 71-66 defeat versus the Tigers (5-5).

HOW IT HAPPENED
- A three-pointer from Trey Traeder at 14:54 had Edgewood College ahead 7-5 at 14:54, but Wittenberg would control the next 2:41. They pushed ahead with 11 unanswered points for a 16-7 lead.
 
- The Tigers would lead by as much as 12, but the Eagles struck back. Down 23-11, they scored seven straight to cut the lead to 23-18 at 5:30. Wittenberg extended their lead on a 12-3 burst to send themselves to the locker room ahead 35-26.
 
- The Tigers would build up to a 40-27 advantage at 17:43 in the second half, but Edgewood College hung on with an 8-0 run. The tenacious Eagles refused to go away, keeping within striking distance as the minutes ticked down.
 
- They found their opportunity late. Down 69-58, Edgewood College scored eight unanswered to close within 69-66 with :48 left. The Eagles found themselves unable to capitalize on strong defense and good rebounding as a pair of free throws from Wittenberg with nine seconds left sealed their victory.
 
- Edgewood College posted an impressive 20-to-0 advantage in points off turnovers. The Tigers were effective attacking the paint with a 36-to-16 edge.
 
- Wittenberg held a 51.9-to-41.7 advantage in field goal percentage and 39-to-30 in rebounding.
 
- Drew Houtakker posted team highs with 19 points and eight rebounds. He also had a pair of steals.
 
- Trent Tousana scored 12 points and earned five assists.
 
- Hunter Hardyman was the everyman with eight points, four assists, four blocks, four rebounds, and three steals.
 
- Trey Killens paced all scorers with 23 assists. He also facilitated other Tigers scorers with seven assists.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Hardyman's four assists, four blocks, and three steals were career bests.
 
- Tousana's five assists were a new high watermark as an Eagle.

- The meeting was the first between the two programs.
 
UP NEXT
Edgewood College will return to the friendly confines of the Todd Wehr Edgedome next Saturday. They will continue Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action with the Dominican Stars. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
