Eagles fall to sharp-shooting Falcons

MADISON- The Edgewood College Eagles men's basketball squad continued their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) homestand at the Todd Wehr Edgedome Saturday. They took on the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons. The Falcons (1-6, 1-3 NACC) took advantage of a hot hand beyond the arc to take down the Eagles (2-7, 1-3) 78-66.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Edgewood College led early, eight points in a row from Concordia Wisconsin propelled them to a 10-4 advantage at 16:25. The Eagles would close within 18-17 at 11:42 with a 5-0 rally. The next 4:40 were all Falcons as they put together a 14-4 burst to lead 32-21 with 7:02 left.
 
- The visitors would ride their hot hand to the locker room ahead 42-28. Concordia Wisconsin shot 60 (15-of-25) percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.
 
- Concordia Wisconsin continued to cruise in the first ten minutes of the second half. A 5-0 burst put them ahead 51-36 with 13:16 remaining. Edgewood College battled back valiantly. Down 57-44 with 9:29 left, a 10-3 run cut the deficit down to 60-54 at 5:59. The Eagles would hang around until back-to-back three-pointers from Casy Verhagen all but iced the game, putting the Falcons ahead 67-56 with 2:39 left.
 
- Concordia Wisconsin shot 46.2 (6-of-13) percent from beyond the arc in the game. They had a 17-to-2 edge in fast break points.
 
- Verhagen finished the day with 31 points, five assists, and four steals. He shot 9-of-18 from the field, 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, and 10-of-10 from the free throw line.
 
- Matt Merlo earned 10 points and eight rebounds. He also contributed a block and a steal.
 
- Mekhi Sutton and Logan Landers rounded out the double-digit scorers for the visitors with 13 and 11 points respectively.
 
- Drew Houtakker paced Edgewood College with 12 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.
 
- Hunter Hardyman contributed 11 points, two blocks, and two steals.
 
- Trent Tousana scored 10 points and added four assists.
 
- Trae Kreibich and Danny Mulcare both finished with nine points.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Tousana's four assists and Kreibich's nine points were both personal bests as Eagles.
 
UP NEXT
Edgewood College will wrap up their three-game homestand with the Marian Sabres. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
