Second half struggles down Eagles versus Pointers

MADISON – The Edgewood College Eagles men's basketball squad hosted their second game of the season at the Todd Wehr Edgedome Saturday evening. They faced off with the UW-Stevens Point Pointers, receiving votes in the preseason D3hoops.com Top 25. The Eagles (1-1) hung tough with the Pointers (3-0) in the first half, but the visitors pulled away for a 71-56 victory in the second frame.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After being down 5-0 early, Edgewood College scored seven unanswered to take a 7-5 lead at 16:12. UW-Stevens Point controlled the next few minutes of action, going on a 14-6 stretch to lead 19-11 at 10:30. The Pointers would go scoreless for the next 5:42 of play as the Eagles grabbed a 22-19 advantage at 5:11.

- After UW-Stevens Point battled back to a 22-22 draw, a three from Payton Bower followed by a fastbreak layup from Matt Kirk put Edgewood College ahead 27-22. The Pointers would carry momentum into the locker room on a 10-2 run to close the half, including a three pointer that beat the buzzer from deep.
 
- The Eagles shot well in the first half, earning a 54.17 (13-of-24) field goal percentage.
 
- After Trey Traeder evened the game 32-32, UW-Stevens Point scored eight in a row for a 40-32 tally with 15:56 left in the game. The Pointers continued to roll as shots struggled to fall for Edgewood College, building up to a 53-40 lead with 10:13 remaining. UW-Stevens Point kept the pressure on in the last 10 minutes, leading by as many as 22 points to close out the victory.
 
- The Pointers shot 51.72 (15-of-29) from the floor in the second half, while the Eagles only earned a 25 (6-of-24) shooting percentage from the field. UW-Stevens Point also had a 28-4 gap in their favor for points in the paint.
 
- Malik Abdul-Wahid led the way for the visitors with 16 points. Darrius Bolden earned nine blocks, eight rebounds, and three steals.
 
- Drew Houtakker played well. He tallied 10 points, nine rebounds, four blocks, and three steals.
 
- Trent Tousana recorded 10 points.
 
UP NEXT
Edgewood College will look to rebound on the road next weekend. They will face off against the University of Chicago Maroons on Sunday, November 24. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Chicago, Ill.
