Eagles drop nonconference matchup at Spartans

DUBUQUE, IOWA – For the final time this season, the Edgewood College Eagles men's basketball team battled in non-conference action. They traveled to face the Dubuque Spartans, receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com poll. The Spartans (15-4) pulled past the Eagles (8-12) with a strong second half in 82-58 fashion.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- An 8-4 rally gave Edgewood College the first substantial lead of the afternoon at 11:28 with a 21-13 advantage. The Eagles would keep Dubuque at arm's length until the Spartans put together a 15-2 rally to head into the locker room up 35-30.
 
- A 7-3 reply in the first few minutes of the second half pulled Edgewood College within 47-44 at 13:51. A 13-6 answer from the hosts would leave them ahead 60-50 with 7:52. Dubuque would gradually build up their lead for the rest of the frame, finishing the day up 82-58.
 
- Jaylin McCants proved to be a centerpiece of the Spartans attack. He finished with 27 points with 10-of-20 shooting from the field.
 
- Sam Kilburg added on 19 points with 72.7 (8-of-11) percent shooting.
 
- Luke Cervelli was a highlight for Edgewood College. He recorded 16 points on 72.7 percent shooting.
 
- Cade Ellingson tallied 12 points, while Dawson Hughes scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.
 
- Trey Traeder earned nine points and four assists.
 
- Dubuque took advantage of Eagles errors, claiming a 25-to-12 advantage for points off turnovers.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Eagles are third in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) with 3.65 blocked shots per game as a team.
 
UP NEXT
Edgewood College returns to conference play Wednesday evening. They will face the Concordia Chicago Cougars in Chicago, Ill. with first tip scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Eagles won a high-octane offensive affair 93-89 earlier this season at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
