MEQUON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles women's tennis squad continued their northward swing Saturday morning. They entered a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) showdown with the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons. In a rematch of last year's NACC Tournament Finals, the Eagles (4-3, 4-1 NACC) battled to the bitter end against the Falcons (6-0, 5-0 NACC), falling 5-4 to the defending champs with the difference being a tiebreaker set.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College claimed a 2-1 advantage in doubles. The tandem of
Cecile Fuchs and
Evelyn Taylor fell in no. 1 doubles to Ricki Budewitz and Ashley Samuta in 8-3 fashion. The Eagles rallied in the second and third matches, with
Jewel Lindwall and
Maddy Coopmans claiming an 8-5 victory, while
Ellie Murphy and
Madelyn Connaughty won 8-4 as the third tandem.
- Singles started out in a dead heat between the avian squads. Budewitz continued her strong afternoon with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Fuchs, but Coopmans countered with a 6-4, 6-1 win in no. 5 singles. Sofia Buhr defeated Taylor 7-5, 6-1 in third singles to even things up at three apiece in the match, while
Christina Ekkela continued her strong season in no. 6 singles with a 7-5, 6-2 victory to claim a 4-3 advantage.
- Murphy won 6-3 in the first set of no. 4 singles, but Malloy Moen countered with a 6-4 set two followed by a 6-0 win in the third tiebreaker set. Lindwall and Ashley Samuta found themselves locked in a tense contest for all the marbles at 4-4. Samuta won 6-3 in the first set, but Lindwall found another gear to even the match with a 6-1 set three. The two were locked in a tense contest to the bitter end, but Samuta won the day for the Falcons with a 7-6 (7-5) set three.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The victory evened the all-time series at 12-12 between the rivals.
- Concordia Wisconsin has won three in a row in the series.
- The last six matchups between the two programs have all been within two points or less.
UP NEXT
The Eagles return to southern Wisconsin next Tuesday for more NACC action. They play at the MSOE Raiders with first serve scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Edgewood College holds an 18-0 advantage in the all-time series over the Raiders.
