WHEATON, Ill. – The Edgewood College Eagles women's tennis team opened their 2023-24 slate on the road Friday evening. They faced the Wheaton Thunder in their season opener. The Eagles (0-1) forced some exciting tiebreakers, but in the end the Thunder (1-0) opened their season with a 9-0 sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wheaton set the tone of the match early in doubles.
Cassie Henderson and
Madelyn Connaughty fell by an 8-3 margin as top doubles, while
Ellie Murphy and
Jewel Lindwall dropped no. 2 doubles by the same margin.
Christina Ekkela and
Evelyn Taylor were defeated by an 8-2 final in third doubles.

Cecile Fuchs and Taylor found themselves in trhilling matches in singles. Fuchs won 7-6 in her first set, but a 6-3 loss in set two forced a tiebreaker where she eventually was defeated. Taylor bounced back well in her second set from a 6-3 loss, turning things around with a 6-1 victory before dropping in three sets as well.

Lindwall fell 6-0, 6-3 in no. 2 singles, while Murphy was beaten by a 6-1, 6-3 margin in no. 3 singles.
Ekkela lost 6-0, 6-2 as no. 5 singles, while Henderson wrapped things up with a 6-2, 6-2 loss in sixth singles.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College is still winless against the Thunder since the series started in 2009.
UP NEXT
- The Eagles will wrap up their opening weekend in Wheaton, Ill. Saturday. They will square off against Lake Forest with first serve scheduled for 9:00 a.m. The Foresters lead the series 5-1 and won the last outing 5-4 at Wheaton, Ill. back in 2021.
